พระจันทร์ในบ่อน้ำ The Moon in the Reservoir

ณ คืนวันเพ็ญ มีพ่อค้าจากต่างแดนเดินทางไกลมายังหมู่บ้านเล็กๆ แห่งหนึ่งที่ใจกลางหมู่บ้านนั้นมีบ่อน้ำขนาดใหญ่ที่รายล้อมด้วยเหล่าชาวบ้าน ต่างถือเครื่องมือต่างๆ อยู่ครบมือ และชาวบ้านต่างก็ดูวุ่นอยู่กับบางสิ่งบางอย่างตรงใจกลางบ่อน้ำนั้น         On the night of the full moon, a travelling merchant visited a small village. In the center of the village was a large reservoir, which was surrounded by the villagers carrying tools. The villagers were busily attending to something in the middle of the reservoir.

พ่อค้าสงสัยว่าชาวข้านกำลังทำอะไรอยู่ เขาจึงเอ่ยถามกับชาวบ้านคนหนึ่งว่า “พวกท่านกำลังจะทำอะไรกัน” ชาวบ้านคนนั้นจึงตอบว่า “พระจันทร์ตกลงไปในบ่อน้ำของพวกข้า และตอนนี้พวกข้าก็กำลังพยายามช่วยพระจันทร์ขึ้นมาอีกครั้ง”         The merchant wondered what they were doing, and asked one of the villagers, “What are you all doing?” The villager answered, “The moon hasfallen into our reservoir, and we are trying to help it rise again.”

เมื่อได้ยินเช่นนั้นพ่อค้าก็หัวเราะและพูดออกไปว่า “ฮ่า…ฮ่า…ฮ่า…สิ่งที่พวกท่านเห็นในบ่อน้ำนั้นเป็นเพียงเงาสะท้อนของพระจันทร์จากท้องฟ้าเท่านั้นแหละ พวกท่านไม่ควรเสียเวลามาทำเรื่องไร้สาระนี้เช่นนี้เลย”         When the merchant heard the villager’s answer, he began to laugh and said, “Ha ha ha, the thing that you villagers see in the reservoir is just a of the moon in the sky. You shouldn’t waste your time doing something as useless as this.”

แต่ไม่มีชาวบ้านคนใดเชื่อที่พ่อค้าพูด ต่างนำข้าวของเครื่องใช้ที่อยู่ในมือไล่ตีพร้อมขับไล่พ่อค้าออกไปจากหมู่บ้านในทันที         But none of the villagers believed him, and they began to attack the merchant with their tools, until they drove him out of the village.

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า อย่านำภูมิรู้ของตนไปวิพากษ์วิจารณ์บรรทัดฐานของผู้อื่น Do not use your knowledge to comment on the standards of others.
