ห่านอยากเป็นหงส์ The Goose That Wanted to Be a Swan

กาลครั้งหนึ่ง มีห่านตัวหนึ่งมีขนสีขาวราวกับหิมะ มันรู้สึกภาคภูมิใจอย่างมากกับความงามที่ธรรมชาติได้มอบให้แก่มัน และเจ้าห่านก็คิดว่าตัวมันเองเป็นห่านที่สวยงามที่สุดในฝูง

Once upon a time, there was a goose with feathers as white as snow. It was very proud of the beauty nature had given it, and thought it was the most beautiful goose in the flock.

เจ้าห่านเริ่มแยกตัวออกจากฝูงและว่ายน้ำตัวเดียว มันพยายามวางตัวให้งดงามและสง่างามที่สุด โดยการชูคอให้สูงที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ เพราะมันคิดว่าถ้ามันมีคอยาวจะทำให้มันงดงามราวกับหงส์   เจ้าห่านพยายามยืดคอของมันจนมันรู้สึกเจ็บไปหมด แต่มันก็ยังไม่ละความพยายาม

The goose began to separate itself from the flock, swimming alone, while trying to look as beautiful and graceful as possible. It would extend its neck out as far as it could, because it thought if it had a long neck, it would be as beautiful as a swan. The goose tried to extend its neck until it felt hurt. However, it kept trying.

จากนั้นมีกบตัวหนึ่งว่ายน้ำผ่านมา และพูดขึ้นว่า “ถึงเจ้าจะพยายามอย่างไร เจ้าก็ยังคงเป็นเพียงห่านตัวหนึ่งเท่านั้น ไม่สามารถจะกลายเป็นหงส์ได้หรอกนะ”

And then a frog swam passed by and said, “Athough you keep trying, you are just a goose. You would not be a swan.”

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

จงพอใจในสิ่งที่ตนเองมีอยู่ การเปลี่ยนแปลงวิสัยของตนเป็นสิ่งที่ยากจะทำได้ Be satisfied with what you have, because it is very hard to change one’s character.
